Slightly worrying news from the Royal Society is published today, showing that despite overall growth in postgraduate study science is being left behind. The report expresses concern that the UK might find its position as a leader in the science industry, and as a provider of scientific careers and science jobs in jeopardy. The good news appears to be that it is not to late and the report goes on to offers some useful suggestions that could be adopted to halt the decline. Check out the link to see the full report.

Bad news for the sedentary as scientist have discovered that being inactive in your leisure time can make you biologically up-to 10 years older. It gets even worse for people in a manual job as as it appears that only “leisure” exercise helps slow down the aging process. Check out the New Scientist article here. With companies looking for a wide age demographic in their workforce it will pay to hit the gym if you are hoping for a long career in science

Channel 4 Dispatches recently aired a documentary about the Truth About What’s In Your Food. It examined the fact that British consumers are moving away from a fast food eating culture and are spending more money on premium ready meals and foods that claim health benefits. Dispatches investigated these packaging claims by subjecting them to much laboratory analysis. The results showed that labelling can be grossly inaccurate by as much as 20% and that “healthy” options can have more calories than ordinary ranges. They examined the accuracy of nutritional information on the packaging of many ready meals and found a dramatic difference between what the labels state and reality such as the percentage of fat. It was found that flawed legislation allows misleading information to be featured on packaging and that in fact animal feed is more highly regulated. CK Science celebrated the end of another record year of successful scientific recruitment with a fantastic weekend at Breadsall Priory Hotel and Spa near Derby. The highlight of the weekend was the Saturday evening dinner and disco.
On the BBC’s Today Programme today, 25 January 2008, comedian Eddie Izzard, in a discussion about whether there are national barriers to humour, admitted that he only discovered he could make people laugh because of his A level Chemistry teacher, who had a habit of always leaving his sentences unfinished. Eddie took great pleasure in finishing his sentences for him, to the amusement of the rest of the class, and swears that’s where he developed his comedy technique. He also admitted it made him very popular with the girls, at which point John Humphreys made the sort of comment you do not expect to hear on Radio 4 at 8am. Listen again?
I heard some amazing news from the States today, that a team of scientists built the entire DNA code of a common bacterium in the laboratory using blocks of genetic material. Apparently they are hoping to use the technique to produce organisms that can produce bio-fuels and take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. An incredible breakthrough for science, this is bound to create large amount of spin off research for years to come.
So the government has had a slight change of heart on capital gains tax, which should help all those looking at starting a small business, just as long as you only intend starting one during your life. I just hope that it is enough to keep encouraging innovation in science and technology and that UK continues to produce new start up technolgy based companies. Which in turn will hopefully need the specialist recruitment services of CK Science.
